What is an ultrasound scan?
Ultrasound uses sound waves to show organs and soft tissues on a screen. It does not use radiation.
A water-based gel is spread on your skin and a small handheld probe is moved over the area. The gel wipes off easily afterwards.

- Transvaginal (TVS) (a closer view of the uterus and ovaries)

Why doctors request it
- Abdominal pain, and liver or gallbladder problems
- Kidney stones, urine infections and bladder problems
- Pelvic pain, irregular periods and fertility assessment
- Thyroid swelling and neck lumps

- Swellings and lumps under the skin
How to prepare
- Abdominal scans: do not eat for 6 hours before your scan.
- Pelvic and kidney scans: come with a full bladder.
- Thyroid, breast and soft-tissue scans usually need no preparation.

What happens during the visit
You lie on a couch and the doctor applies gel and moves the probe over the area. You may be asked to breathe in and hold, or to turn on your side.
For a transvaginal scan, a thin probe is gently placed in the vagina. It gives clearer pictures of the uterus and ovaries. The doctor explains it first and asks for your consent, and a female chaperone is available on request.
Common questions
Does ultrasound hurt?
No. You may feel light pressure from the probe. With a full bladder, pelvic scans can feel a little uncomfortable, but only for a short time.
Why do I need a full bladder?
A full bladder pushes the bowel out of the way and lets sound waves pass through clearly to the uterus, ovaries, prostate and bladder.
Can I eat before a thyroid or breast scan?
Yes. Abdominal scans are the ones that need fasting.
Do I need an appointment?
No. You can walk in during opening hours. If your scan needs preparation, such as fasting or a full bladder, message us on WhatsApp first so you arrive ready.
