What is a pregnancy scan?
Pregnancy scans check your baby's growth, heartbeat and position, as well as the placenta and the fluid around the baby.
Ultrasound uses sound waves, not radiation, and is used safely throughout pregnancy.
Types we offer
- Early pregnancy scan (confirms the pregnancy, heartbeat and dates)
- Obstetric (routine) scan (growth, position, placenta and fluid)
- Anomaly scan (a detailed check of the baby's body, usually in mid-pregnancy)
- Umbilical and fetal colour Doppler (checks the baby's blood supply)
- 3D/4D ultrasound (surface images of the baby. It does not replace a medical scan.)
Why doctors request it
- Confirming a pregnancy and working out the due date
- Checking the baby's growth and position
- Looking at the baby in detail at the anomaly scan
- Checking blood flow if your doctor is concerned about growth
- Bleeding or pain during pregnancy
How to prepare
- Bring your antenatal card and any previous scan reports.
- Some early pregnancy scans need a full bladder. Ask us on WhatsApp before you come.
- Later scans usually need no preparation.
- Wear a two-piece outfit so the abdomen can be uncovered easily.

What happens during the visit
You lie on a couch and gel is applied to your abdomen. The doctor moves the probe over it and takes measurements.
In early pregnancy, a transvaginal scan may give a clearer view. It is only done with your consent.
