What is an IVP?
For an IVP, a contrast dye is injected into a vein in your arm. As the kidneys filter the dye, a series of X-rays shows the kidneys, the tubes that drain them (ureters) and the bladder.
Why doctors request it
- Kidney stones
- Blood in the urine
- A suspected blockage of the urinary tract
- Checking the shape of the kidneys and bladder
How to prepare
- IVP needs preparation, which may include bowel preparation and not eating beforehand. Message us on WhatsApp before your visit and we will send the instructions.
- Tell us if you have diabetes, kidney disease or asthma, or have ever reacted to contrast dye.
- Bring your doctor's request and any recent blood test results.
- If you are pregnant or might be, tell us before your visit.

What happens during the visit
A plain X-ray is taken first. The dye is then injected into a vein and more X-rays are taken over the following period. You may be asked to empty your bladder before the last picture.
Many people feel a brief warm flush or a metallic taste when the dye goes in. This passes quickly.
Common questions
Is the contrast dye safe?
Reactions are uncommon. Staff ask about allergies, kidney problems and diabetes before the test, and watch you during and after the injection.
Can I eat afterwards?
Yes, unless your doctor has told you otherwise. Drinking plenty of water afterwards helps flush out the dye.
